The function of the foot

The functions of the foot are connected with the fact that it provides our contact with the ground – statics, dynamics, stability and the perception of position and movement through receptors. The foot is able to stiffen and acts as a shock absorber. Its influence on the whole body is great, because the feet serve as support for upright posture. The arch of the foot works as both a spring and a shock absorber. That is why, with pronounced flat feet, we see back pain in patients, because body shocks are not dampened and the spine suffers as a result.

We distinguish two basic arches in the foot: the longitudinal and the transverse. Three factors are involved in maintaining them: the shape and architecture of the foot bones, the foot's ligament system and the foot muscles. When one or more of them fails, the foot becomes deformed and its function is disrupted.

How the examination by a physiotherapist / podiatrist works

Every foot deserves an individual assessment, which is why the therapy includes an examination of the whole body in various positions, an evaluation of standing and stability, gait and dynamics, and the function of the individual joints of the lower limbs. This is followed by an examination of the footprint on a podoscope, a consultation about your footwear (everyday, sports or medical shoes, as well as worn-out shoes and orthopaedic insoles used so far) and active therapy targeted at the lower limb with the client's active cooperation.
